STUDENTS MASTERING IMPORTANT LIFE-SKILLS EDUCATION
"...in serving the best interests of children, we serve the best interests of all humanity."- Carol Bellamy Students Mastering Important Life-skills Education (SMILE) Program is an educational program designed to cater to the awareness of young children & adolescents from 1st-10th std by embedding values of life skills in the context of physical, psychosocial and emotional issues according to their age.
The process begins in standards 1st-4th with Child Protection section. Special flipchart story adapted for India provide basic knowledge about being safe and how parents and teachers can be supportive and protective for students at home, school and in public places. In addition to this children in 5th-7th standard are trained on issues related to gender, for instance equality, sensitivity and responsible behaviour. For the 8th-10th standard, professional doctors conducting workshops emphasize on Puberty changes widening the topic of genders and reiterarting the child protection story too. For the 10th standard there is also a basic information on HIV, STI's, Pregnancy and Contraception.
The Program approaches underprivileged children from BMC Schools in Mumbai as well as in Private Schools in order to incorporate the model of sustainability. The aim is to create awareness in a non-threatening way based on positive, simple language and interactive participation. The continuum of Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced Sessions enables to see the progress and evaluate the whole process of attaining behavioural changes over a period of three years.
Research has found that individuals who developed life skills in a positive rather than preventive manner feel a great sense of competence, usefulness, power and belonging to understand, protect, report and most important ways to respond or act.
The Program also involves adults (Parents, Teachers & Admin staff) who partner on the program. Special sessions for parents prepare them for counselling their children in open discussions at home on a daily basis, Teachers are advised how to instill awareness in the minds of children in order to master important life skills during their education. The third part for administrative staff creates the responsible attitude of all employees who can have the influence on child's safety during school time.
Samabhavana Society also provides and then streamlines the health care access of the underprivileged, marginalized adolescents in 53 schools of E Ward of Brihan Mumbai Mahanagar Palika (BMC) high schools by way of quarterly health check up in an academic year.
The objective is to increase continuum of health care facilities to the student community of Brihan Mumbai Mahanagar Palika schools in E Ward in order to provide a quarterly doorstep health check up and to provide data on better health management of students to parents.

PRISM
PARTNERING RESOURCES FOR INDIA IN SUSTAINABLE MOVEMENT
Project:
Partnering Resources for India in Sustainable Movement (PRISM) - An Initiative of Samabhavana Society.
Our Goal:
The long term goal of PRISM initiative is to ensure that the discriminated and stigmatized communities also benefit from the CSR process- under Section III – "Measures for reducing inequalities faced by socially and economically backwards groups"
Objectives of PRISM initiative:
The key objective of this initiative is to facilitate a platform for Corporates to support developmental issues that otherwise would not be supported due to the mere association that may hamper their Corporate brand value and hence will not associate, wherein the Corporates will share the project at a fraction of cost and still ensure impact in the marginalized communities, that are visibly – invisible.
Background:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not going to solve the world's problems. That said, CSR is a way for companies to benefit themselves while also benefiting society. Reasons for Corporates to engage in CSR are multiple, to mention innovation, cost savings, brand differentiation, long-term thinking, customer engagement and employee engagement.
Five years ago, it was considered good if a company simply did not harm the environment. However, times have changed, and now employees, customers,, stock holders and society demand that their company do more than simply not be bad. It requires a different form and less voluntary approach on CSR policies and practices.
The PRISM initiative was exactly developed for this reason, to offer a solution to changing CSR environments, offer opportunities to improve existing CSR policies and practices and provide extensive services to companies to develop their CSR initiatives with exciting and innovative projects and most important work with communities that hitherto would not have got CSR support.
Rationale:
For India to move well in to the 21st century there is an imminent need to work with the truly disadvantaged communities that cry out for support BUT, will not get in the area of social development.
With the passing of the Company Bill, Section 135, schedule VII, some see CSR issues became part of the mainstream conversation, twenty years ago, CSR was limited to corporate philanthropy and for some businesses, the adherence to environmental legislation. What we see today is a far more complex picture and an ever-widening stakeholder universe. And now CSR is mandatory and compliance for all which will positively affect their bottom lines.
